Description:
In 2009, the 7th Brazilian National Seminar on Distance Education, organized by the Brazilian Association of Distance Education (ABED), happened online for the first time. The Organization Committee (Joao Mattar, Marco Silva and Eliane Schlemmer) decided not to use a single platform for the event, but on the contrary, to use several tools, in order to show that distance education can, nowadays, be performed in different ways.
Tools used for the activities: mailing lists, blogs, mind maps, games, Moodle, Second Life, Eduverse, webcasts, webconferences, videoconferences, tv, radio, YouTube, wikipedia, Flickr, wikis, Netvibes and Twitter.
The program of the Seminar was developed collaboratively in a wiki, powered by MediaWiki. The results were impressive, with more than 2,000 participants intensively interacting during 9 days of activities.
This presentation will explain how the Seminar was organized and evaluate the results of using this combination of tools during the event.
About the Presenter:
Joao Mattar holds Bachelor Degrees in Letters and Philosophy, a Graduate degree in Business and Administration, a PhD in Literature, and did a Post-Doc at Stanford University. He is a University Professor, Writer, and Distance Education and Educational Technology Researcher.
