Description:
This presentation outlines a program called “Motivating Math with Motorsports” created by Dr. Patrick E. Dessert. The program uses the excitement of racing and modifying cars to motivate and inspire students to do well in math. This program makes math interesting and grounds the abstraction of math in the real world. This makes the “dry topic” of math very relevant, enabling incredible achievement.
The presentation relates excellent results that have been achieved at the elementary, high school, and university levels. For example, the college-based student organization won awards in vehicle restoration as well as becoming the first student-based team to ever win an award in professional racing in the history of North America.
The presentation will present with many pictures and case studies the evolution of the program, how it works, why it works, and how it is currently manifest itself in a regional effort called the Illinois Motorsport Institute.
